Hey Fellow audiophiles, new member. new to sunfire that is. Recently aquired a classic tube pre matched with signature 600-2 driving maggies 3.6R's. The gentlemen I purchased them from was a phono guy, I am not(yet). I am am also new to tubes. He had installed the phono board with upgraded tubes. I was wondering since I will be enjoying this almost daily but not using the phono stage. should I disconnect the phono board to extend the life of the tubes? thank you in advance.

to answer your question, I did try the RIAA reverse phono loop, but I can not give and accurate review just yet because I changed to many things at once. I just started using the SD/A-490t cd player, which has its own tube buffer. Howerver, I happen to be bypassing this as well through the digital out. I've already become acustom to the Musical Fidelity X-series (PSU, DAC, 10, the X-10 of which is an output tube buffer as well). I also agree that I need to take advantage of the phono section with an actual turntable. but at this point I don't own one or know much about them. And due to the fact that my LP collection consists of zero! I fugure I will not be using the phono section for a while. This brings me to the original question: If the phono stage is not going to be used, should I remove it to save tube life. Or do they not wear out runining idle?

Welcome to the forum rtu0894. AFAIK tubes used in preamps and CDPs are usually stressed very little; so little in fact that they should usually outlive their owner as well as the equipment they are in. Tubes used in power amplifiers are another story entirely, usually lasting anywhere from a few years to a decade or more.

I wouldn't worry about the longevity of the tube life in the phone section as the chassis of the Classic Tube Preamp has plenty of space in it and ventilation is not a problem. On the other hand, removing it won't harm anything as long as you replace the chassis mounting plate with the original one to get your CD input back.
